A Little History...
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church was built in 1819.
The colonial era Church of England had an established congregation here in Sharpsburg. The town’s founder Joseph Chapline sold the land to the congregation for the traditional nominal sum of “one peppercorn”, as was the English tradition.
During the Battle of Antietam, it suffered artillery damage and it was roughly used by both sides as a hospital and shelter.
Attempts were made to repair the structure, but in the end, it had to be replaced.
The cornerstone of the main building you see today was laid in 1871. Later additions (Edwards and McKinley Rooms) were attached later.
